Google is reportedly working on a new “Desktop Mode” for Android devices, aimed at transforming smartphones into PC-like machines. Similar to Samsung DeX and Motorola’s Smart Connect, this feature will allow users to experience a desktop-style interface directly from their phones.
Although early signs of this mode surfaced back in 2023, recent leaks from Android’s source code confirm that the feature is actively being developed and is nearing a public release. However, sources suggest that it still requires refinement and is unlikely to debut with Android 16. Instead, most reports point to Android 17 as the likely launch platform, possibly alongside the next generation of Pixel devices.
The leaked code names the feature “Android Desktop Mode” and hints at several powerful multitasking tools. Users will be able to open multiple apps in resizable windows, use a taskbar, easily switch between apps, and manage apps more efficiently — offering an experience similar to a Windows or Chrome OS environment.
A notable aspect of the mode is the seamless transition between mobile and desktop interfaces. Users will connect their Android device to an external display via USB-C, with potential wireless support being considered later — following the lead of Samsung and Motorola.
