Govt to Offer IT Certifications to 500,000 Youth and Introduce AI Education in Primary Schools

In a major push towards digital transformation, the federal government of Pakistan will provide IT certifications to 500,000 youth this year, while also introducing artificial intelligence (AI) education at the primary school level, according to updates shared with the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology.

Federal Minister for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja revealed that top global tech giants like Google and Microsoft have launched certification programs in Pakistan to help address the growing digital skills gap.

She emphasized the importance of early AI education, stating,

“Children must be equipped with future-ready skills, and the introduction of AI at the school level is a critical step toward achieving that.”

A committee formed under the Prime Minister is currently revising the national curriculum to incorporate IT education across all school levels.

In a strong message to higher education institutions, the minister called for greater accountability, suggesting that universities producing unemployable IT graduates should face consequences. She proposed that the Higher Education Commission (HEC) halt funding to such institutions.

During the meeting, the committee also reviewed the appointment process for the Director General (DG) of International Coordination. Shaza Fatima clarified that while the current DG was re-appointed, the post was re-advertised to ensure transparency and inclusiveness. Over 1,400 candidates applied for the position.

Addressing concerns from Senator Manzoor Kakar about opportunities for new graduates, she noted that the DG role is specifically designed for mid- to senior-level professionals, and not for fresh entrants to the job market.

This comprehensive approach—spanning youth upskilling, curriculum reform, and institutional accountability—reflects the government’s commitment to building a digitally empowered and globally competitive workforce.
