Korean manufacturer Samsung initially ended up claiming that both the Galaxy S22 as well as the Galaxy S22 Plus would end up featuring with 120Hz screens and both these devices would also have the capabilities to drop as low as 10Hz. However, as far as the recent updated specs sheets are concerned, the display can only drop as low as 48Hz. So why is this then the case?
Samsung clarified all the confusion that came about then by saying : “We would like to clarify any confusion relating to the display refresh rate for the Galaxy S22 and the S22 Plus. While the display component of both devices support between 48 to 120Hz, Samsung’s proprietary technology offers adjustable refresh rates, where data transfer rates from AP to display can be minimized to as low as 10Hz in order to save power consumption.”

The brand then proceeded on to add that it has indeed changed the minimum refresh rate as far as its promotional material is concerned to that of 48Hz to indeed be in line with the more “widely recognized industry standard.”
All in all, what Samsung is then claiming is that its display hardware actually supports a minimum refresh rate of 48Hz. However, as far as the act of reducing data transfer rate between the processor and display to 10Hz is concerned – it means that there happens to be an efficiency gain in theory due to the fact that the processor doesn’t exactly have to deliver as much display data.
And so in respect to all this, the screen is still refreshing at 48Hz, even if the data transfer rate is there at 10Hz. And so all in all, the screen is still in fact checking for new display data and is displaying this data 48 times a second, even if the display data only happens to change 10 times every second.
