In a late-night policy shift, the Government of Pakistan has significantly increased the tax on high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs. 28.69 per litre, while simultaneously reducing the petroleum levy on petrol. The move reflects a strategic adjustment in fuel taxation as authorities attempt to balance revenue targets and economic pressures.

According to official details, the petroleum levy on diesel—previously set at zero—has now been reinstated at nearly Rs. 28.7 per litre, marking a sharp increase in the tax burden on diesel consumers.

In contrast, the government has provided slight relief on petrol by reducing its levy by Rs. 3.88 per litre, bringing it down from Rs. 107.38 to Rs. 103.50 per litre.

This adjustment comes amid ongoing fiscal challenges and commitments linked to international financial institutions, where increasing petroleum levies has been a key revenue-generating measure. Previously, petrol already carried a significantly higher tax burden compared to diesel, with levies crossing Rs. 100 per litre in recent weeks.

The decision is expected to have wide-ranging implications, particularly for transport, logistics, and agriculture sectors that heavily rely on diesel. Analysts warn that higher diesel costs could lead to increased freight charges, ultimately pushing up prices of essential goods and contributing to inflationary pressure across the economy.

Meanwhile, the slight reduction in petrol levy offers minimal relief to consumers but is unlikely to offset the broader impact of rising fuel costs. With global oil prices remaining volatile and domestic fiscal pressures mounting, fuel pricing policies in Pakistan continue to shift rapidly.

As the government recalibrates its taxation strategy, consumers and businesses alike are bracing for further adjustments in the coming weeks, especially if international oil markets remain unstable.
