The controversial GCU Fee Hike has sparked strong criticism from students after Government College University (GCU) Lahore reportedly increased repeat and summer semester fees by nearly 150 percent without prior notice. The sudden increase has created financial pressure for many students already struggling with rising education costs in Pakistan.
According to reports, the university increased per-subject repeat semester charges from Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 15,000. Students claim the revised fee structure was implemented abruptly, leaving many families unprepared for the additional financial burden.
The impact becomes even more severe for students repeating multiple subjects. Those retaking two or three courses may now have to pay between Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 45,000 or more for a single semester. Many students argue that the revised costs could make continuing higher education difficult for middle-class families.
Students have also criticized the university administration for allegedly failing to provide proper advance notice or a detailed explanation behind the sharp fee increase. Social media reactions show growing frustration, with many demanding transparency and immediate reconsideration of the decision.

The issue comes at a time when higher education costs across Pakistan continue rising due to inflation, reduced institutional funding, and increasing operational expenses faced by universities. Analysts warn that repeated fee hikes may reduce educational accessibility for students from lower-income backgrounds.
Several students have urged GCU Lahore administration and relevant education authorities to review the revised fee structure and introduce relief measures. They argue that education should remain affordable and accessible rather than becoming an added financial crisis for struggling households.
Education experts believe Pakistan’s higher education sector may continue facing financial challenges unless broader reforms, better funding mechanisms, and stronger regulatory oversight are introduced nationwide.
So far, Government College University Lahore has not publicly issued a detailed statement addressing the growing student concerns regarding the reported fee increase.
