Govt Imposes Harsh Penalties for Misuse of NTNs and CNICs

The federal government has announced strict new penalties in the 2025–26 budget to tackle tax evasion and the fraudulent use of National Tax Numbers (NTNs) and Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) numbers.

According to high-level sources, individuals who knowingly provide false NTN or CNIC information on tax returns or official documents will face serious consequences. The new law stipulates a fine of up to Rs. 500,000 and imprisonment for up to three years for offenders.

The measure aims to strengthen the integrity of the tax system and prevent misuse of identification data. Authorities say that any instance discovered through proceedings or investigations under Section 230(2)(a) of the Income Tax Ordinance will trigger the penalties.

This move underscores the government’s commitment to improving documentation and transparency within the country’s tax framework.
