Historic snowfall in Pakistan is now being widely discussed as the country braces for what could be the most severe cold wave of our lives. Are we about to witness an unprecedented weather event, or has the world’s most advanced and reliable weather forecasting system — the European model — malfunctioned, leaving us stunned by projections that suggest extraordinary winter conditions ahead?

After nearly 100 years, conditions appear to be forming for snowfall in the plains of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan. According to the satellite images obtained from this model, snowfall can be seen over Pakistan’s plain areas between January 23 and January 26, including Islamabad, Jhelum, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, and Lahore. In addition, dozens of other areas can also be seen experiencing snowfall in these projections.

Historically, such a situation has never been witnessed, except in Islamabad, Wah Cantt, Taxila, and Kamra, where snowfall was last observed in 1984, and videos and images of that event are still available. If something similar happens again in January 2026, it would be the first time in our lifetimes and would mark a new chapter in meteorological history.

My personal opinion:
It is possible that these weather models are showing such scenarios due to a virus or a data system error. There are still about 12 days remaining until those dates, and long-range forecasts often turn out to be incorrect. Given today’s highly unpredictable weather patterns, even 48-hour forecasts are proving accurate, while 72-hour forecasts often fail. Therefore, nothing can be stated with certainty at this stage.

We will need to closely monitor the changing weather situation on a daily basis and wait until a final forecast emerges. The situation will become clearer after January 15 to January 18. God willing, history may be made in the coming days, during which we might witness snowfall for the first time in many plain areas of Islamabad, Punjab, and Potohar.

One thing, however, is certain: a very intense cold wave is expected to enter during the last ten days of January, which may cause extremely low temperatures across the country and could set new records.

According to my personal understanding and knowledge, God willing, under the influence of upcoming western disturbances, light snowfall may occur on the Margalla Hills in Islamabad, Fort Munro in Dera Ghazi Khan, Kallar Kahar (Salt Range), and Landi Kotal’s higher mountains.

Meanwhile, in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the snowline may descend to elevations as low as 2,500 feet above sea level. Heavy to extremely heavy snowfall is expected in the higher mountainous regions of Murree, Galiyat, Kalam, Kaghan, Kumrat, Chitral, Skardu, Gilgit, Astore, and Neelum Valley.

Note:
The final and authoritative forecast regarding the upcoming weather situation will be issued only by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and relevant Government of Pakistan institutions. I have also observed that certain notorious so-called weather pages on social media are spreading fear and sensationalism among the public merely to gain cheap fame and views.

Therefore, please do not believe such claims at this stage. Wait for the official announcements by the Pakistan Meteorological Department, and consider only their forecasts as final. Follow all advisories and alerts issued by them.

Remember one thing: we can predict the weather, but we cannot control it. Weather conditions can change every passing hour, and ultimately, only what Allah Almighty wills comes to pass.
