The Rawalpindi Bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday accepted a petition for hearing that challenges the Punjab government’s decision to extend summer vacations in schools.
The petition was filed by a student named Danial, who raised concerns about the prolonged closure of educational institutions. Justice Jawadul Hassan presided over the hearing and issued notices to the Punjab Education Secretary and other relevant officials, requesting formal responses.
Representing the petitioner, Advocate Hafiz Waqar Ahmad Awan argued that the Punjab Education Department had unjustifiably extended the summer break, which could have serious consequences on students’ academic progress. He stated that keeping schools shut for nearly three months amounts to “playing with the future of children.”

During the proceedings, Justice Jawadul Hassan questioned the logic behind the extended holidays. “Courts have remained open even during times of war. What is this trend of shutting schools first due to summer and then due to fog?” he remarked.
The judge highlighted that education is a fundamental right of every child and stressed that students must not be deprived of learning opportunities. He also noted that parents pay substantial school fees in the hope that their children will continue to receive uninterrupted education.
The case will move forward once the court receives responses from the government officials involved.
