Pakistan’s National Cyber Emergency Response Team (NCERT) has launched a nationwide cybersecurity audit of government websites following a major hacking attempt targeting online platforms across the country.

According to officials, around 300 government websites—including portals of ministries, departments, and public institutions—have been selected for a detailed security review to identify weaknesses and prevent potential cyberattacks.

So far, cybersecurity scanning has been completed for about 280 websites, while the remaining platforms are still under assessment. Authorities say the audit has already reached approximately 93% completion, with security reports shared with relevant ministries for immediate corrective action.

The review uncovered several vulnerabilities in servers, web applications, and backend systems. These issues range from critical and high-risk flaws to medium and low-level weaknesses that could potentially allow unauthorized access or data breaches if left unresolved.

Government departments have been instructed to strengthen cybersecurity measures, update outdated software, deploy web application firewalls, and improve monitoring systems to detect suspicious activity. Authorities also warned that some websites may require upgrades or temporary shutdowns to eliminate security gaps.

The move comes amid increasing cyber threats in Pakistan, as officials warn that hackers and organized cyber groups are increasingly targeting digital infrastructure and government systems. Strengthening cybersecurity is now seen as essential to protect sensitive data and maintain the stability of public digital services.
