On World Safer Internet Day on 11 February 2025, Kaspersky experts highlighted the increasing online risks faced by children, focusing on one of the most popular gaming platforms—Roblox. The company analyzed the growing threats linked to this digital playground and revealed disturbing statistics regarding cyberattacks disguised as Roblox-related files.

A Growing Target for Cybercriminals

In 2024 alone, Kaspersky detected over 1.6 million attempted cyberattacks disguised as Roblox-related files. With millions of active users, Roblox is more than just a game; it serves as a digital space where children worldwide connect, explore, and customize their gaming experience. Unfortunately, this popularity has made it a prime target for cybercriminals, who disguise malicious files as mods, cheats, or free in-game currency generators.

Alarming Attack Stats

In 2024, Kaspersky identified 1,612,921 attacks disguised as Roblox-related files. The highest frequency of attacks occurred in August, with 179,286 attempts, followed by 160,116 in September and 151,638 in October.

Common Scams in Roblox

A prevalent scam in the gaming world involves offering free in-game currency. One such scheme involves tricking users into entering their game ID or username and selecting their preferred gaming platform (Android, iOS, Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo). The scam creates the illusion of an official multi-platform tool. Victims are then prompted to complete “verification” tasks or surveys in exchange for the prize, which often promises items like a new iPhone or PlayStation. However, to receive the prize, the victim is asked to pay for delivery, only to lose the money without receiving anything in return.

Protecting Children Online

Safer Internet Day serves as an essential reminder to prioritize digital safety—especially for young gamers who are frequent targets of cybercriminals. According to Vasily Kolesnikov, security expert at Kaspersky, “Cybercriminals are constantly evolving their tactics, and to protect kids who are actively exploring the digital world, we need to make cybersecurity an essential part of their upbringing. By promoting cyber hygiene, using trusted security solutions, and teaching essentials like enabling two-factor authentication, we can create a safer online environment where kids can enjoy their favorite games without falling victim to scams.”
