Pakistan’s information technology (IT) export sector recorded a slight decline in May, but overall performance remains strong, keeping the industry on course to meet its annual target of around $4.5 billion.

According to official data reported from industry sources, IT exports experienced a month-on-month dip in May 2026 after several months of steady growth. Despite this short-term slowdown, the broader trend continues to show strong year-on-year expansion, with exports significantly higher than the same period last year.

Industry analysts note that fluctuations in monthly IT export figures are common due to factors such as client payment cycles, seasonal demand variations, and contract timing. However, the underlying trajectory of Pakistan’s IT sector remains positive, driven by increasing global demand for software development, freelance services, and IT-enabled solutions.

The government had earlier set an ambitious target of $4–5 billion for IT exports in FY2025–26. Recent performance indicators suggest that the sector is still tracking close to this goal, supported by steady inflows from computer services, software exports, and freelance platforms.

Experts believe that continued policy support, improved digital infrastructure, and expansion of the skilled IT workforce will be critical in maintaining growth momentum. While short-term dips like May’s are being observed, they are not currently seen as a sign of structural weakness in the sector.

Instead, Pakistan’s IT industry continues to be one of the fastest-growing segments of the economy, with long-term potential still strongly intact.
