Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a series of extraordinary measures to deal with the economic challenges and fuel shortage caused by the ongoing regional conflict. The provincial government says the steps aim to conserve petroleum resources and ensure essential services continue during the crisis.

One of the major decisions includes the immediate suspension of official fuel for provincial ministers until the petroleum crisis improves. In addition, the petrol and diesel allowance for government officers’ vehicles has been reduced by 50 percent with immediate effect.

The government has also imposed restrictions on protocol vehicles accompanying ministers and senior officials. Only one essential security vehicle will now be allowed to accompany provincial ministers and top government officials.

To further reduce fuel consumption, the Punjab government has announced a work-from-home policy for government offices, with only essential staff required to attend offices physically. Despite the remote work arrangement, officials clarified that government operations will continue without disruption.

As part of the emergency plan, schools, colleges, and universities across the province will remain closed from March 10 to March 31. However, examinations will continue according to the scheduled timetable, and educational institutions have been encouraged to conduct online classes during this period.

For public convenience, digital services such as e-business platforms and the “Maryam Ki Dastak” service will remain operational. Government meetings will also be conducted through online sessions and teleconferences to minimize travel and fuel usage.

Authorities have also imposed a ban on government outdoor events, and the popular Horse and Cattle Show cultural festival has been postponed. The government has directed officials to strictly monitor the supply and distribution of petroleum products across the province.

To strengthen oversight, district-level petroleum monitoring committees will be formed in every district. The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has been tasked with developing a Track and Trace system for petroleum products, with representatives from the district administration, police, and other departments included in the monitoring team.

The chief minister has also directed authorities to strictly monitor transport fares across Punjab and take legal action against anyone charging excessive fares. Officials have been instructed to keep a close watch on the supply and prices of essential food items to prevent shortages or price manipulation.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif has appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary outdoor functions, late-night shopping, and panic buying of essential goods during the crisis. She urged citizens to show patience, unity, and responsibility in these challenging times.

The chief minister also paid tribute to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir for their leadership during the crisis, emphasizing that anyone trying to exploit the difficult situation for personal gain would be dealt with strictly and decisively.
