In Barcelona, digital nomads have faced unexpected hostility from locals, who have resorted to water pistols to express their discontent. In contrast, other parts of Spain are rolling out the welcome mat for remote workers. Extremadura, a picturesque and rural region near Portugal, is offering a generous incentive to attract digital nomads. The local government is providing grants of up to €15,000 to those willing to relocate to this less-populated area.
The grant is designed to cover various living costs, including housing and land, and comes with a commitment to stay in Extremadura for at least two years. While the region boasts scenic landscapes, affordable living, and robust internet connectivity, potential movers should consider the extreme summer heat and the quieter lifestyle.

With a total budget of €2 million, the program aims to support approximately 200 remote workers. Grants are tiered based on age and location: individuals under 30 or those moving to villages with fewer than 5,000 residents can receive €10,000, while others are eligible for €8,000. The program is open to all nationalities that can live and work in Spain. EU nationals will find the process simpler, but non-EU citizens can apply through Spain’s digital nomad visa.
Applications will open in September and remain open until the budget is exhausted. To apply, candidates will need a digital certificate or Spanish electronic ID, proof of remote income, and must not have resided in Extremadura in the past six months. Successful applicants will be notified within three months of their application.
