WhatsApp has officially introduced a new privacy-focused feature called “Incognito Chat,” allowing users to have completely private conversations with Meta AI. The feature is designed to ensure that even Meta itself cannot access or read user interactions with the AI assistant.

The new Incognito Chat mode is powered by Meta’s “Private Processing” technology, which processes conversations in a secure environment isolated from Meta’s servers. According to the company, chats created in this mode are temporary, disappear automatically, and are not stored after the session ends.

Meta says the feature was created to address growing concerns about privacy while using AI assistants for sensitive topics such as health, finances, work, or personal advice. Users can ask questions or seek help from Meta AI without worrying about their data being visible to the company or third parties.

Unlike traditional “incognito” modes offered by other AI platforms, Meta claims WhatsApp’s implementation uses end-to-end encryption combined with secure cloud processing technologies to prevent access to conversations. Reports indicate the system relies on Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), adding another security layer for AI interactions.Initially, Incognito Chat will support only text-based interactions with Meta AI. Features like image uploads, AI image generation, and multimedia sharing are currently disabled in private mode, although Meta plans to expand functionality in future updates.

Meta also announced an upcoming “Side Chat” feature, which will allow users to privately interact with Meta AI alongside existing chats without disrupting the main conversation. The company says this feature will also use the same Private Processing system to maintain privacy protections.

The rollout of Incognito Chat has already started for WhatsApp and the standalone Meta AI app, with broader global availability expected over the coming months.

The launch comes as tech companies face increasing scrutiny over how AI platforms handle user data and conversation logs. Meta is positioning WhatsApp’s new private AI system as a major differentiator against competitors such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, whose temporary chats may still retain limited conversation data for security or training purposes.
