At least 11 Pakistani crew members have been taken hostage after pirates seized an oil tanker near the coast of Somalia, raising fresh concerns over maritime security in one of the world’s most dangerous shipping routes.

According to reports, the vessel was intercepted by armed pirates while sailing through waters known for piracy activity. The attackers managed to board the tanker and take control, holding the crew hostage as they moved the ship toward Somali territory.

The incident highlights a worrying resurgence of piracy in the region, particularly along key maritime corridors that connect global trade routes. These waters are crucial for international shipping, especially for oil and energy supplies, making such attacks a serious global concern.

Maritime security experts note that Somali pirates often target slow-moving commercial vessels, using small boats and coordinated tactics to overpower crews. In many cases, hijacked ships are held for ransom, with negotiations sometimes lasting weeks or even months.

Authorities and international naval forces are expected to closely monitor the situation, as anti-piracy operations continue in the region. Past incidents have shown that coordinated military responses can help secure the release of hostages, though outcomes often depend on complex negotiations.

The latest hijacking underscores the ongoing risks faced by seafarers, including Pakistani nationals who frequently serve on international vessels. It also renews calls for stronger security measures and international cooperation to combat piracy in the region.
