Google Pixel Phones Now Offer “Medical Grade” Thermometer Capabilities.

The recently introduced half-baked thermometer feature, initially announced with the Google Pixel 8 series, is now gaining enhanced functionality through the latest Pixel feature drop. Users can now utilize it as a “medical grade” thermometer for measuring body temperature. Google’s claim of “medical grade” suggests that the phone manufacturer may have obtained FDA clearance for this feature.

During the Samsung Galaxy S24 launch, a new feature called Circle to Search was unveiled and is now officially available for Pixel phones. Interestingly, this feature coincides with the Galaxy S24 going on sale on January 31.

Circle to Search enables users to quickly perform a Google search on anything highlighted on the screen by long-pressing the home button. Additionally, the update introduces Magic Compose to the Pixel 6 series. Similar to the “Help me write” feature for Google Chrome, Magic Compose employs AI to assist users in rewriting drafted messages in different styles.

While on the Pixel 8 Pro, this processing occurs on-device, older devices will rely on cloud processing, necessitating an internet connection and potentially resulting in slower performance.

The feature drop also replaces the Nearby Share feature with Quick Share, a streamlined branding shared between Google and Samsung. Although the name has changed, the functionality remains the same, allowing users to swiftly share content between nearby Windows, ChromeOS, and Android devices that support the feature.

Additionally, audio switching for Pixel watches aims to make audio source switching more seamless. This feature allows users to switch Pixel Buds Pro from a Pixel Watch to various Pixel phones or tablets, accompanied by helpful notifications indicating the audio source.

The Messages app is receiving Photomoji support, enabling users to transform their favorite photos into reactions using on-device Google AI. To utilize this feature, users simply select a photo, identify the object they want to react with, and send it. These updates will be gradually rolled out to Pixel phones over the next few weeks.
