On Thursday afternoon, users of smart home systems linked to Google Home/Nest and Spotify streaming services experienced widespread connectivity issues. Attempts to access Spotify’s website returned a message stating “Audiences in Jwt are not allowed,” while the app itself showed connection errors.

The disruption stemmed from a global Google Cloud outage that began around 1:51 PM ET. This incident also affected several major platforms such as Twitch, Snapchat, Anthropic, Shopify, and Discord. Initial error reports were tracked via Downdetector and ThousandEyes.

Though Google Cloud’s status page did not immediately acknowledge the problem, it was later updated to confirm multiple Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services were impacted by an issue in its Identity and Access Management (IAM) services. By 6:16 PM ET, Google reported that most services had recovered, with only minor residual effects remaining.

Cloudflare, a company that provides essential network infrastructure for many websites, also experienced disruptions. However, the company clarified that its core services remained unaffected, and the limited outages were linked to dependencies on Google Cloud infrastructure.

Replit CEO Amjad Masad confirmed the outage on X (formerly Twitter) at 2:34 PM ET, noting that Google Cloud’s issues had brought Replit offline. Spotify, a known Google Cloud customer, was also among the affected platforms — not for the first time.

By the end of the day, both Google and Cloudflare reported that systems were largely back to normal.
