IT Ministry Introduces Six-Pillar Strategy to Speed Up AI Adoption in Pakistan

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) has introduced a comprehensive Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy framework built on six key pillars to accelerate adoption, innovation, and global competitiveness.

The framework focuses on AI Innovation Ecosystem, Awareness and Readiness, Secure AI Ecosystem, Transformation and Evolution, AI Infrastructure, and International Partnerships and Collaborations — aiming to strengthen Pakistan’s AI landscape across multiple sectors.

Under the AI Innovation Ecosystem, performance will be measured by the number of startups and SMEs using AI, job creation in AI-based roles, and industry adoption in areas like smart cities, healthcare, and agriculture. Increased investment and funding for AI ventures will also be prioritized.

The Awareness and Readiness pillar will expand AI research and intellectual property through more research papers, patent applications, and dedicated funding for research initiatives, ensuring Pakistan’s workforce is prepared for the evolving AI sector.

For the Secure AI Ecosystem, the emphasis will be on reducing cyber threats, enforcing data standardization, and promoting ethical AI use. Awareness campaigns will encourage responsible AI practices, while digital integration of institutions such as WAPDA, NADRA, FBR, and the health and education sectors will enable real-time data sharing.

The remaining pillars — Transformation and Evolution, AI Infrastructure, and International Partnerships and Collaborations — target sector-specific AI adoption, enhanced national AI computing capacity, creation of AI hubs, accessible datasets, and the development of local large language models. Additionally, Pakistan will pursue global partnerships, joint research, and participation in international AI forums to stay aligned with global AI advancements.
