Pakistan has officially launched its long-awaited 5G spectrum auction in Islamabad, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital transformation and the future of high-speed connectivity. The auction allows telecom operators to compete for multiple spectrum bands that will enable the rollout of next-generation mobile services.

The auction process began through a specialized electronic auction system, with major telecom companies such as Jazz, Zong, and Ufone participating in the bidding. In the first phase, operators are competing for spectrum across several frequency bands that will support both enhanced 4G services and the deployment of 5G networks across the country.

Officials say the initiative is expected to significantly improve mobile internet speeds, network capacity, and digital connectivity nationwide. The introduction of 5G is also expected to accelerate technological innovation, strengthen Pakistan’s digital economy, and enable emerging sectors such as smart cities, artificial intelligence applications, and Internet of Things (IoT) services.

Several important frequency bands are included in the auction, including 700 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz, and 3500 MHz. These bands are crucial for delivering wider coverage, higher speeds, and low-latency connectivity required for advanced mobile technologies.

Once the auction concludes and operators secure spectrum licenses, telecom companies are expected to begin infrastructure upgrades for the commercial rollout of 5G services, which will likely start in major cities before expanding nationwide.
