This week, thousands of Android users across Pakistan were caught off guard when their call and contacts settings suddenly changed. The unexpected alterations led many to believe their phones had been hacked or compromised, as users reported unfamiliar dialer screens, call layouts, and contact settings.

Did Google Really Change Android Phone Settings in Pakistan?

Yes — but it’s not what people feared.
According to tech experts, the changes were not due to any security breach or malware. Instead, they were triggered by a regular system update from Google. The update is part of the Material You (Material 3) design rollout, which brings a refreshed look to core Android apps.

What Actually Changed?

The update included:

  • A redesigned Phone app
  • New call control layout
  • An updated dialer interface with a cleaner and more modern look

For users who frequently rely on the dialer, the shift felt sudden and disruptive, especially since the update rolled out without user confirmation in many cases.

Who Was Affected?

Most complaints came from users running Android OS 15.
Interestingly, some users reported receiving the update without manually downloading it, and even while their phones were offline. Those using older Android versions did not experience any noticeable changes.

Why the Confusion?

Because the dialer is one of the most used interfaces on any phone, even minor design tweaks can be jarring. The new layout made handling calls feel unfamiliar for many users, causing frustration and concern.

Is It a Security Risk?

No.
Experts have confirmed there is no indication of hacking, data theft, or device malfunction. This is a standard UI update aimed at improving the user experience across Android devices.

The Bottom Line

Google’s Material 3 update is gradually being rolled out worldwide, and Pakistani users were among the latest to receive it. While the sudden changes sparked confusion, they are safe and intentional. Android users may need a little time to adjust, but there’s no cause for alarm.

Meanwhile, iPhone users have not reported any similar interface changes.
