Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela announced on Sunday that Malta will officially recognize the State of Palestine next month, emphasizing the nation’s humanitarian response to the escalating crisis in Gaza.

Addressing a political gathering, Abela expressed grave concern over the rising civilian toll in the region. He cited reports that nearly 54,000 Palestinians—mainly women and children—have lost their lives due to ongoing Israeli military operations.

“We cannot ignore this deepening human tragedy,” Abela declared, underlining the urgency of international attention and intervention.

Malta’s formal recognition of Palestine will take place after an international conference on June 20. The Prime Minister described the move as a “moral obligation” grounded in humanitarian values.

Tribute to Grieving Palestinian Family
In a particularly emotional moment, Abela spoke about Dr. Alaa Al-Najjar, a Palestinian pediatrician who recently suffered a devastating loss. An Israeli airstrike in Khan Younis killed nine of her children, critically injured her husband, and left only one child alive.

As a gesture of compassion, Abela announced that Malta is ready to offer refuge and support to Dr. Al-Najjar and her family. This humanitarian gesture reflects Malta’s broader commitment to justice and peace in the region.

Malta joins a growing list of nations advocating for the diplomatic recognition of Palestine and calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
