Meta has introduced a new content protection tool for Facebook creators, designed to prevent their original reels from being reposted without permission. The feature, called Facebook Content Protection, notifies creators whenever their work is shared on Facebook or Instagram without authorization.

Once alerted, creators can:

  • Block visibility of the reel across both platforms.

  • Track performance of the reposted content.

  • Add attribution links directing viewers to their own profile.

  • Release claims if they wish to allow the content to remain online.

This initiative is part of Meta’s broader effort to promote originality on its platforms. In July 2025, the company removed 10 million profiles impersonating major creators and took action against 500,000 accounts involved in spam or fake engagement.

How It Works

The feature relies on the same matching technology as Rights Manager, showing how closely a reposted reel matches the creator’s original content. It also provides additional details like views, follower count, and monetization status of the account sharing the content.

Creators can manage the system by:

  • Adding trusted accounts to an allow list.

  • Releasing claims on specific videos.

  • Adding attribution links to track performance.

Blocking a reel limits its reach without penalizing the account that reposted it. Meta warns that misuse of the tool, such as submitting false claims, may lead to restrictions or loss of access to the feature.

Eligibility and Access

The tool is automatically available to creators in Facebook’s Content Monetization program who meet Meta’s standards for originality and integrity. Creators using Rights Manager are also eligible. Notifications appear in the Feed, Professional Dashboard, or profile. Access can also be verified or requested via the Content Protection section on Facebook’s website.

Disputes and Future Expansion

Creators can challenge incorrect claims through Meta’s IP reporting channel or report content that the system fails to detect. Currently, the feature is available only on mobile, but Meta is testing expansion to the Professional Dashboard on desktop.
