National Assembly Passes Bill Banning Child Marriages in Islamabad

The National Assembly has approved a landmark bill banning child marriages within Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), setting 18 as the minimum legal age for marriage. The law criminalizes underage marriages and imposes penalties on parents, guardians, clerics, and marriage registrars involved.

Nikah registrars are now required to verify the CNICs of both individuals before conducting or registering a marriage. Violators face up to one year in jail, a fine of Rs. 100,000, or both.
