OpenAI has introduced a new version of its AI assistant specifically designed for K-12 teachers. The platform, called ChatGPT for Teachers, aims to support educators in the classroom and will be free for verified school employees until June 2027.
Classroom-Ready AI for Educators
With many students already using ChatGPT for homework, OpenAI is now turning its focus toward teachers. ChatGPT for Teachers is designed to help educators prepare assignments, create lesson plans, and generate classroom materials. The tool allows teachers to explore AI in a controlled environment and at their own pace.

This version includes all features from the consumer edition of ChatGPT, including:
- Unlimited messages with GPT-5.1 Auto
- Support for app connectors and file uploads
- Image generation
- Memory tools
Compliance with School Privacy Rules
A key differentiator of this version is its compliance with the Family Education Rights Act (FERPA), which sets strict rules for handling student data. OpenAI has also enhanced collaboration features, allowing teachers to share chats with colleagues and receive suggested prompts based on how other educators have used the AI assistant.
Expanding AI in Education
Before launching this tool for teachers, OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT Edu, giving schools and universities the ability to provide students with institutional access, similar to school email accounts. The company also introduced Study Mode, available to all users, which explains answers step by step.
Other tech companies are also targeting education. Google, for instance, offers discounts on its Gemini tools to attract students. By focusing on teachers, OpenAI hopes to strengthen its presence in the education sector and encourage wider adoption of its AI models.
