The tri-fold smartphone era has officially arrived, and two tech giants—Samsung and Huawei—are already battling for dominance. With the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold and Huawei Mate XTs Ultimate Design, the foldable race has entered its most ambitious phase yet.

Design Philosophy: Inward vs. Outward

Samsung adopts an inward-folding dual-hinge design, protecting its massive 10.0-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display. When closed, it offers a practical 6.5-inch cover screen, making it familiar and durable for everyday use.

Huawei goes for a bold outward-folding Z-shape, where the display wraps around the body, transforming into 6.4-inch, 7.9-inch, and 10.2-inch modes. While more versatile, the screen remains partially exposed, raising long-term durability concerns.

Display and Stylus Support

Both devices open into tablet-sized screens, but Samsung delivers a better experience with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and up to 1600 nits brightness. Huawei counters with a slightly larger 10.2-inch 3K OLED, but limited to 90Hz.

Huawei’s edge is stylus support (M-Pen 3), making it more appealing for creators, while Samsung surprisingly offers no stylus compatibility, despite its tablet-like size.

Build, Materials, and Durability

Samsung uses Armor Aluminum, a titanium hinge, Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, and offers IP48 resistance. At 12.9mm folded and 309g, it’s sturdy but slightly heavier.

Huawei claims aerospace-grade steel, an advanced hinge system, and a slimmer 3.6mm unfolded profile, while weighing a lighter 298g. However, its exposed display remains a liability.

Performance, Battery, and Charging

Samsung runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, with up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage. Huawei debuts the Kirin 9020, promising a 36% performance boost.

Both have 5600mAh batteries, but Huawei dominates charging with 66W wired, 50W wireless, and 7.5W reverse. Samsung trails at 45W wired, 15W wireless.

Camera Systems

Samsung opts for flagship-grade hardware:

  • 200MP main
  • 12MP ultra-wide
  • 10MP telephoto (3x zoom)
  • Dual 10MP selfie cams

Huawei focuses on versatility:

  • 50MP variable main
  • 40MP ultra-wide macro
  • 12MP 5.5x periscope
  • 1.5MP multispectral sensor
  • 8MP front

Both systems are powerful, but Samsung’s AI processing and tuning likely deliver superior results in real-world photography.

Software and Desktop Experience

Samsung ships with Android 16 and One UI 8, offering full Google services and better app compatibility worldwide.

The TriFold also supports Samsung DeX natively, allowing true desktop-style multitasking directly on its 10-inch display.

Huawei runs HarmonyOS 5.1, which lacks native Google services, and its desktop mode requires external projection, making it less convenient.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold is the more refined, practical, and globally usable device. Its inward-folding protection, 120Hz display, Snapdragon performance, and full Android experience make it the best tri-fold option for most users.

Huawei’s Mate XTs is innovative, especially with stylus support and fast charging, but its exposed display and software limitations hold it back.
