Chinese smartphone makers Vivo and Honor are reportedly preparing to launch a new generation of “wide” foldable phones, potentially beating both Apple and Samsung in introducing the next major foldable design trend.
According to recent leaks shared by Chinese tipsters on Weibo, Vivo is developing a wider foldable smartphone that could arrive as part of the upcoming Vivo X Fold 6 lineup. The device is expected to focus on a broader display aspect ratio, giving users a more tablet-like experience compared to the tall and narrow foldables currently dominating the market.
Reports also suggest that Vivo may significantly reduce the visibility of the display crease — one of the biggest complaints users still have with foldable devices. If successful, the improvement could help Vivo gain a competitive advantage in the premium foldable segment.
Honor is also rumored to be working on its own wide foldable device, intensifying competition among Android manufacturers. While official specifications remain unknown, early leaks hint at a high-end camera setup and a design aimed at offering a more natural smartphone-to-tablet transition.
Samsung has already been linked with a “Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide” model, which is expected to feature broader display proportions than previous Fold devices. However, Chinese brands may launch their products earlier, potentially putting pressure on Samsung’s foldable leadership.

Apple, meanwhile, is still rumored to be developing its first foldable iPhone, but the company has yet to officially confirm any plans. This delay could allow Chinese manufacturers to dominate the next phase of foldable innovation before Apple enters the category.
The foldable smartphone market has grown rapidly over the past few years, with companies experimenting with slimmer designs, wider screens, improved hinges, and even tri-fold devices. Huawei already made headlines with the launch of the world’s first commercial tri-fold smartphone, showing how aggressively Chinese brands are pushing innovation in the segment.
Industry analysts believe the move toward wider foldables could improve usability for multitasking, gaming, video streaming, and productivity applications. The trend may also help foldables feel more like traditional smartphones when folded, addressing one of the main criticisms of earlier designs.
Although the devices are still based on leaks and unofficial reports, Vivo, Honor, Samsung, and Apple now appear set for a major new battle in the rapidly evolving foldable smartphone market.
