UK Introduces Mandatory Electronic Travel Authorization for 84 Countries

The United Kingdom has announced a new travel requirement for citizens of 84 countries that previously enjoyed visa-free entry. Starting from February 25, 2026, travelers from these countries will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before visiting the UK.

Under the new system, visitors must apply online for the ETA prior to travel. The authorization will be digitally linked to the applicant’s passport and checked by airlines before boarding. Travelers without an approved ETA will not be allowed to enter the UK.

The ETA is designed for short-term visits, including tourism, business trips, and family visits. Once approved, it allows multiple entries for a set period, with each stay typically limited to six months. Most applications are expected to be processed quickly, though travelers are advised to apply several days in advance to avoid delays.

British and Irish citizens, along with individuals holding valid UK visas or residency permits, are exempt from this requirement. The move is part of the UK government’s broader effort to strengthen border security and modernize immigration procedures through digital systems.

The introduction of the ETA means travelers from visa-exempt countries will need to plan ahead, ensuring authorization is secured before making travel arrangements.
