Bilawal’s “Temu Netanyahu” Remark on Modi Sparks Online Controversy

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari stirred a social media debate after sharply criticizing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a press conference in New York. While his strong political rhetoric received praise from many, one particular analogy triggered backlash and controversy online.

Bilawal likened Modi’s leadership trajectory to that of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating, “Modi has gone from being the Butcher of Gujarat to the Butcher of Kashmir—and now seems intent on becoming the Butcher of the Indus Valley Civilization.” However, his comparison of Modi to a “Temu version of Netanyahu” caught widespread attention and drew criticism for unintentionally reinforcing outdated stereotypes about Chinese innovation.

Former PTI leader Asad Umar responded to the remark on social media platform X, defending the Chinese e-commerce platform Temu. He pointed out that Temu is among the fastest-growing apps in the U.S., with a user base approaching 10% of Amazon’s and is poised to surpass it.

While Temu has not issued an official response, many tech influencers in Pakistan defended the platform, highlighting its global rise. Others, however, noted the platform’s past missteps, emphasizing the need for more nuanced public discourse on Chinese tech ecosystems.
